As some of you may well know by now, the beloved Kongfrontation attraction at Universal Studios Florida will soon be gone for good! It has been confirmed that the last day to ride the signature attraction will be September 8, 2002. The rumored replacement attraction has gone from an Apollo 13 coaster to a more recent rumor of a high-tech attraction based on The Mummy films that have enjoyed much success at the Box Office. On a personal note I will definitely miss this ride as it has always been a favorite attraction at that park, and has always drawn anticipation and excitement from guests. From the first day it opened, through all the technical difficulty and almost a full year delay, right on through to the last roar!! In my opinion closing Kong is like Disney closing It's a Small World, it's part of their logo..what they are known for..part of their history. I certainly hope that his replacement will be well worth the effort, because that monster will be very much missed by many...thanks for all the rides since 1990!

I am very sad to hear about this myself. I'm just hoping they take this out and put in something worth it unlike disney did a couple years back. You know with Mr. Toads wild ride, that was my favorite at Magic Kingdom and they replaced it with a stupid winnie the pooh ride which wasn't half as good as toad. Anyway the main rumor is that it will be an indoor coaster, the themeing as SFGAfan said is being disputed and rumored all over the place. I personally think they're not gonna take out all the new york themeing in the building, why ruin such great themeing! This way the coaster could be themed to such movies as MIB or Spiderman. This is my opinion and I know theres many more options, but why would they replace the themeing if that would just cost them extra and they could still use the themeing in the building for the new attraction???

Just a brief UPDATE, for anyone who may be in the Orlando area around the close date of September 8. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Universal Studios Florida is planning an "official farewell salute" to Kong on September 8, at 5:45 P.M. This will include a special ceremony with the executives, exclusive last rides for the Annual Passholders, as well as some type of free Kong "gifts" that will distributed to the Passholders. I'm afraid I will miss it by only a month! I am glad I bought the park video tape on my last visit, as it shows almost the entire ride, soon to be just a memory of an awesome attraction.

i'm kind of glad its going. It was a decent ride but the element of surprise was ruined because the guide would tell you what happens before it did. For instance if Kong would pick you up the person was like "hes picking us up", then 5 seconds later it happened. Anways the new ride is some sort of indoor coaster. Rumors are going around that its either an Apollo 13 theme or a Mummy theme. I think the Apollo13 theme is better b/c they already have something for the mummy in the entrance of the Rocky Horror Show. Another theme could be to the Fast and The Furiest. You could be in this car and it rockets you through scenes of the movie.

i know this b/c i've heard rumors and i've seen some sort of design. I forget but it was like 6 months ago. Anyway The Mummy would be a cool ride and even though they already have a little walk through for it, they could still move all the props into the new ride building.

Thrillnetwork.com had posted some alleged ride designs for the Apollo 13 theme a while back, I'm not sure if they are still there or not, I would imagine in the archives. I personally would like to see the Mummy theme take place simply because they could make it a high-tech heavily themed dark ride like Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. They should keep the coasters over in IOA. Not much would have to be done to the exterior of the building if they went with the Mummy theme because the adventure could begin inside of a Museum of ancient history or something, like the Museum from the movie The Relic. The entire premise could be based on an exhibit gone amuck, somehow tied in with the movie. Regardless of what the storyline could be the idea of the mummy would better fit the New York backlot area better than Apollo 13, just my personal opinion though. This could almost be a whole seperate thread, I'm anxious to see what the final design is going to be, either way I am sure it'll be great...but I'll still miss Kong.
